Our 4-day Cuyabeno tour is part of the Classic Tours to the Amazon. It is adaptable and flexible enough for travelers to enjoy an authentic experience in the Ecuadorian East. Although this tour follows an itinerary, this does not mean that we have to strictly follow it. The activities on this itinerary are designed to be rescheduled from one day to the next based on weather conditions, guiding criteria, and travelers' interests. DAY 1: QUITO - LAGO AGRIO - TAPIR LODGE
Your adventure in the forest begins at Lago Agrio, where our driver will pick you up. A fascinating drive will take you to the northeastern part of the Sucumbíos province, as we pass through beautiful rivers and small towns that go deeper into the rainforest.
When we arrive at ”El Puente” (the bridge), we will have lunch before continuing our way to Tapir Lodge crossing the river by canoe. This part of the trip will give you a taste of the flora and fauna that Cuyabeno has to offer. We will make sure that you and your luggage have remained dry during the river walk. After welcoming you at Tapir Lodge, you will have time to settle into your room. Then join us for a wonderful dinner, a chance to get acquainted with your fellow travelers. After dinner, your guide will introduce you to the Tapir Lodge, the Cuyabeno Reserve, and the fascinating experiences planned for your rainforest adventure.
DAY 2: CUYABENO - IGAPO
After a hearty and rich breakfast at the Tapir Lodge, you will embark on the canoes upriver to explore the unique ecosystem of the “Laguna Grande”. As you navigate through the “Igapo” (tropical flooded forest) you will observe the majestic and centuries-old Mimosa trees (Macrolobium), which are the ideal habitat for Bromeliads orchids, Lichens, ferns and Ephiphilum cacti. You will continue your trip to "Terra Firme", from there to make a long walk that will take all morning. The guide will explain to you about the Tropical Humid Forest, a place where a great variety of birds such as the Woodpecker, Tanagers and Toucans will be observed. You will also be able to observe some species of monkeys such as (capuchins, barizos, sakis) After a copious lunch and a well-deserved rest at Tapir Lodge, in the afternoon you will sail again to the "Laguna Grande" to enjoy a wonderful sunset, as well as swimming in the lagoon, observe the fruitful fishing mucots, as well as the Canoe-beaked Herons. Back at Tapir Lodge, you will enjoy dinner in the company of the other guests. After it you can order the Cocktail of your choice and / or you can join a short walk around La Lodge, to explore the nocturnal wonders of the Tropical Humid Forest, seeing tree frogs, insects and Aotus monkeys. Overnight at Tapir Lodge.
DAY 3: VISIT TO THE SHAMANICA HOUSE
At 6:00 am, before breakfast and depending on the weather conditions, we will start the day with an excursion to the Cuyabeno river for bird watching, and a beautiful sunrise in the Grande lagoon. After breakfast at the lodge, we will begin our journey descending the Cuyabeno River, in search of birds such as Toucans, Anis, Oropendolas, and Barizo monkeys. During the trip we will make a stop to visit the local Shaman (healer), who will share with us his experiences in the Tropical Forest. In a small ceremony he will describe the steps that are taken in a healing ritual, to which we are invited to be part of it. Lunch on the banks of the Cuyabeno River. Following the trip we arrive at Puerto Bolívar, a place where with a Siona family, we can participate in the harvest and preparation of Cassave (yucca). This endemic bulb of the Amazon has always been a substantial source of food and in turn the largest provider of carbohydrates for Indigenous Communities. The dry flour of the cassava is toasted in a clay pot for a few minutes and the result is a delicious bread, with a neutral flavor that you will have the opportunity to taste. Both where the Shaman, and in the Community, you can buy crafts made with materials from the Forest. In the afternoon around 18:00 we return to Tapir Lodge. Dinner and accommodation.
DAY 4: RETURN - TAPIR LODGE TO QUITO
After breakfast, at 10:00 AM, it is time to return to Lago Agrio. On the way, you will be able to enjoy the last experience in canoe towards “El Puente”. If we are lucky, we will be able to observe anacondas, monkeys and the "Snake Neck" bird. Lunch on the way. From there our Private transportation will take you to the Lago Agrio airport.

After breakfast we will canoe down the Cuyabeno River until we reach the local community where we will experience the daily life of the community and activities such as gathering and cooking. You will have the opportunity to buy handmade crafts, which are carefully produced by the locals. We finished our meeting with the shaman's visit to his home where he will share his knowledge about the jungle and the processes it uses to heal its people. Here you get to experience an ancient healing ceremony that has been passed down from generation to generation. In the afternoon we will meet the local Siona family. They will show us and invite us to participate in the preparation of the casabe. This local dish, which is prepared with the yucca root (manioc), represents an important part of the local diet and the main source of carbohydrates for indigenous communities in the jungle. Once you have tried casabe we will return to Tapir Logde to spend another night in the middle of the jungle.
DAY 4: NOW IS YOUR TURN AT TAPIR LODGE

DAY 5: RETURN - TAPIR LODGE TO QUITO
After breakfast, at 10:00 AM, it is time to return to Lago Agrio. On the way, you will be able to enjoy the last experience in canoe towards “El Puente”. DAY 3: CUYABENO - CAMP
Today we are going to venture out on a camping expedition. As we sail downstream throughout the morning, we can enjoy searching for the spectacular beauties of the rainforest (monkeys, birds, butterflies, laziness…). After lunch we will look for the perfect place to camp. When they are established we will hike in the forest for the rest of the afternoon, in search of diurnal mammals. We return to the camp for dinner and spend the night in our tents, under the roof of the jungle.
DAY 4: CUYABENO DAY - CANOE
Today we will leave early to glide downstream while enjoying the morning soundtrack of the rainforest. After we return for breakfast, we continue the rest of the morning hiking in the forest. This part of the forest is home to herons, egrets, turkeys, hawks, screaming pihas, orioles, catchers and kingfishers, as well as several species of flying monkeys! Lunch can be enjoyed at the camp, after which we will spend the afternoon aboard our boat gliding silently along the Cuyabeno River, in search of other birds such as toucans, parrots, hummingbirds, breasts, macaws. Once night falls, we go into the forest in search of alligators and other nocturnal animals. Our day will end at the camp.
