Train of the Clouds

Guayaquil - Quito | 4 days - 4 nights | Saturday to Tuesday
US $ 1,650 pp

In this trip aboard the Tren Crucero we will climb 3600 meters in just 450 kilometers, experiencing one of the most impressive changes of vegetation and landscape in the world. From the fertile plains of the coast we ascend to the highlands of the Andes through the mythical Nose of the Devil. Across the Avenue of the Volcanoes we arrive to Quito, World Heritage Site, to move to Otavalo, in the North Andes where we will discover the culture and traditions of the Quichua and the plantations of roses for export. On the way back, your last night awaits you at a hotel in Quito.

Day 1 - Saturday
Durán - Yaguachi - Naranjito - Bucay

* Durán to Yaguachi section operates with steam locomotive.
We left Duran by steam locomotive in the direction of Yaguachi. We crossed the coastal plain with its plantations of tropical fruits, rice, sugar cane and banana until Naranjito.
We moved to a typical coastal hacienda where we discovered the secrets of the best cocoa pepa in the world. Lunch and culture show Montubia before continuing trip to Bucay, from where, if the day is clear, we can still glimpse to the far the peaks of the Andes.

Day 2 - Sunday
Bucay - Devil's Nose - Alausi - Colta - Riobamba

Along the Chanchán canyon the climate and vegetation change with height. The cloud forest clears leaving the moor, as we approach the heights of the Cordillera.
We stop at the Pistishi viewpoint, at the foot of Devil's Nose, to admire the magnitude of this engineering work before embarking on the dizzying climb of 450 meters in just 12 kilometers of zigzag.
From Alausí we continue our journey towards Riobamba, passing through colorful fields of Quinoa. In Colta we visit the indigenous community of Palacio Real to know its history, its culture and its cosmogony.
In Riobamba we have time to visit the handicraft plaza before heading to the hotel.

Day 3 - Monday
Riobamba - Urbina - Boliche - Quito

We leave Riobamba towards Urbina, the highest point of our route. There, in the foothills of the volcano Chimborazo, the last ice chest awaits us to tell the story of his ancestral occupation.
We head north along the Avenida de los Volcanes, the fertile valley that runs between the two arms of the Andes. On clear days up to 20 volcanoes can be seen along the way. On the slopes of the Cotopaxi volcano we explored a unique Andean forest ecosystem before continuing on our way to Quito, with its historical center declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Day 4 - Tuesday
Quito - Otavalo - Ibarra - Quito

Our trip continues to the North Andes. In Otavalo, home to a millenarian market, we board the train, this time dragged by a carefully restored steam engine. Throughout the day we will discover the traditional culture, music, gastronomy, painting, dance and the ancient craft of wood carving inherited from the old "Quiteña School". A night awaits you at a selected hotel in Quito.
